The affects of antibiotics on your gutbiome

Did you know that with every course of antibiotics you take you are killing your good bacteria and allowing the opportunistic bacteria to grow and get out of control? This then leads to a compromised immune system and vulnerability to develop the onset of disease and illness.

Even the contraceptive pill can do this over time. All medications have devastating affects and will chip away at our health gradually and slowly or suddenly and quickly. If left in this state, your gutbiome will be the perfect breeding environment for pathogens and disease forming bacteria to proliferate and grow causing opportunistic bacteria to dominate your microbiome.

One of the most common opportunistic bacteria that seem to get out of control is Candida Albicans. Candida is a yeast spore forming species that often leads to thrush and yeast overgrowth and this is becoming more and more common. It can also leave a person feeling very tired all of the time affecting ones ability to work and function clearly. Many people refer to this as brain fog.

If you are taking medications or have a history of taking many courses of antibiotics, you can turn this around by colonising your gutbiome with beneficial flora produced from probiotics. Selecting a probiotic strain with as many strains as possible that include an additional yeast probiotic such as Saccharomyces Boulardii works better. This is a non-colonizing yeast species closely related to Brewer’s yeast and not related to the yeast group to which Candida belongs. Saccharomyces Boulardii taken orally supports the production of secretory IgA, and helps friendly probiotic bacteria to colonize the GI tract. This is why it is good to be taken with other probiotics.

Whilst probiotics can turn these conditions around for you after re-establishing a healthy microbiome, most people are unaware that probiotics are a mix of ‘transitory’ microorganisms which means the gutbiome will continue to change and drop off in beneficial numbers of healthy microorganisms that the probiotic introduced when the probiotic supplementation is stopped. This is why a good probiotic should be your number one supplement for life and to also balance this with a good healthy diet.

Regular Probiotics will not only keep harmful damaging microorganisms at bay, but also assist in increasing the good bacteria colonies in your gutbiome and maintain a strong immune system. It is often that we don’t appreciate good health until we are unwell and knocked off our feet. It therefore makes good sense to stay on top of your health and be prepared for any such invaders including the flu season ahead. The absence of disease may not be all that well identified but good health sure is appreciated in terms of quality of life when we loose it.
